about

I had the privilege of working in Alice & Adelaide with an amazing group of people who run an organisation called Ninti One. As part of a cultural education process, they took me to Iga Wataa, a special place several hours out of Adelaide, that the Coulthard Family run. I was so deeply moved. How can we (smart white folk…?) know so little about Aboriginal Australia? I'm staggered at my own ignorance. Where do we start?...

lyrics

VERSE 1
The things they taught me just weren’t so cool
At that expensive private school
Left a few things out went through to the keeper
Had to find out for myself, had to lean in and dig it out
Went out to the desert, sat under the stars
Learned the history, yours and mine
Cried in the dark & came back to town
But my brand new perspective, was getting me down

CHORUS

Get up, find out, dig deep, till you squirm
Scratch past the surface, and then you’ll confirm
That all is not right in the country tonight
For some the future is not so bright
Where do you start with smart white folk like me?

VERSE 2
While Greg is playing his football games
Kev and Archie have made their names
But what do we know of the lives of the others?
Is all we learn on TV, you’ve got a hunch there’s more to see
Can we just stop to be, with our sisters and brothers?
Our power and privilege have let us get by
We don’t see the real world, we’ve turned a blind eye
The truth is still hiding from white folk like me

CHORUS X 2

Get up, find out, dig deep till you squirm
Scratch past the surface, and then you’ll confirm
That all is not right in the country tonight
For some the future is not so bright
Where do you start with smart white folk like me?
